Call for urgent action to save the lives of the recent detainees in Iran.
Once again, Esmail Bakshi has been apprehended. His arrest follows the harassment of Esmail Bakhshi and his family since his public call on the Minister of Intelligence, Mahmoud Alavi, over two weeks ago, demanding an explanation as to why he was arrested and tortured for 25 days.
The response of the Islamic Republic was that no torture has taken place, and that Esmail Bakshi has made allegations about the Ministry and the authorities, for which he has to be prosecuted!
Moreover, a “documentary” was screened on the national TV in Iran, showing “confessions” and further allegations of contacts that had been made by the detainees and opposition parties and organisations outside Iran.
Such blatant disregard of any due judiciary process has caused outrage as it manifests how the authorities are not only the investigating body, but also both the judge and the jury. This is a concern that was also raised about the cases of Esmail Bakhshi and Sepideh Ghollian by a number of lawyers in their letter to Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
There is no doubt that the authorities are intent on linking the arrests to the opposition and the “external and foreign forces”, in order to make the cases as one of Security and National Security. The recent apprehensions of Esmail Bakhshi, Sepideh Ghollian, Amir Hossein Mohamadi Fard, Amir AmirGhollian, Sanaz Alhayari, Ali Nejati, are linked together and are to be facing the above charges.
The record of the Islamic Republic in such cases speaks for itself, and leaves no room for anything other than concern for the lives of those arrested. With every hour and every day the risk to their lives grows stronger. It is time to take urgent action to save these workers, students and civil activists. I write to ask you to take urgent action and call on the Islamic Republic authorities to release all those apprehended and abide by the internationally recognised due judiciary process and end the risk to their lives.
