Following the extension of a range of sanctions on Iran, the US administration have now escalated the military presence of the US forces in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East.
The experience of the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the devastation that was enforced on the people in Syria and Libya following their mass struggles, have all shown the duplicitous behavior of the USA and its allies. We have all witnessed the horrors brought about by these wars, and the fallacy of such claims for war as a means to “eradicate WMDs in Iraq” or to “combat Islamic terrorism”, or to “escalate democracy”! The whole world has seen how in all these wars, the real victims have always been none other than the very people who have been struggling against their ruling states.
Today, once again, the threat of a new war is being trumpeted and people in the region are bracing themselves for yet another round of destitution. This is another blow against the people in a region, who have first-hand experience, and know that the US is not waging a war to combat the atrocities of the Islamic Republic; same as the Gulf War was not to combat the crimes of Saddam Hussein. These wars are part and parcel of the USA’s policy, a policy that is pursued to establish US’s role internationally, as the unilateral military force and the gendarme in this region. This time, the excuse is Iran. The threat of this war, however, is not only against the people in Iran but stretches to all corners of the Middle East. A battle ground is being drawn that endangers the lives of hundreds of millions in order to settle the role of the USA and its relations with China, Russia and Europe.
The threat of this war follows economic sanctions on Iran, which has brought misery to the people in Iran. Sanctions to the people of Iran has meant devaluation of the Iranian currency, everincreasing high prices of the basic needs, and further hardship for the great majority of people in Iran. In reality, the extension of the sanctions translates into increased burden, further reduction of purchasing power, shortage of everyday produce, ill-health and extreme poverty
The recent deployment of US military forces has now added salt to injury by bringing the element of war. If not the actual war, even its threat, has created an atmosphere of war, and has provided yet another excuse to the Islamic Republic authorities to militarize the society. The authorities have been using the pretext of war in order to extend the presence of the security forces, militia and troops everywhere, in the streets and workplaces. Moreover, such an atmosphere builds a bleak horizon, and acts against the growing wave of mass protest against the Islamic Republic in Iran. In this atmosphere, any single US shot only extends the miserable life of the Islamic regime in Iran.
The US is once again threatening not only the struggles against the Islamic Republic in Iran, but is also posing an ultimatum against the people in the Middle East. The deployed forces is a show of power against any struggle against the misery that has been enforced by the different states in the Middle East. This is a clear act of bullying by the US administration. We along with hundreds of millions of freedom seeking people demand an end to this further militarization of the region which threatens to destroy the entire fabric of our societies. We demand a complete withdrawal of the US forces and an end to self-appointed role of the US as the gendarme of the region.
